What Makes You Feel Unsafe at d.tech? Students Respond

By: Bret Dubois

One of d.tech’s core values is to provide a safe learning environment for students. Do students believe this value is being upheld?

Q: What makes you feel unsafe at d.tech?

Virginia Kaufusi (freshman): Another lockdown mistake.

Why does that scare you?

Because every time I go to a different class or I’m walking in the hallway and there’s nobody there or I need to use a restroom, I feel nervous that another lockdown alarm might go off.

Q: What makes you feel unsafe at d.tech?

Stellan Shinozaki (senior):  What makes me feel unsafe is how during a community meeting we have to leave our backpacks behind where it’s unprotected for other students to possibly steal things from us.

Q: What makes you feel unsafe at d.tech?

Salvador Coria-Nava (junior): Nothing makes me feel unsafe about d.tech because we’re on the peninsula where it’s safe and sound and it’s just peaceful and all the people here are so kind and thoughtful and mindful.

Q: What makes you feel unsafe at d.tech?

Anonymous:In general? The staff sometimes.

Why do the staff make you feel unsafe?

Sometimes they judge you or they’re rude.

Would you mind giving me more insight into why you think the staff make you feel unsafe?

Either their expectations or what they think d.tech students are supposed to be like, like on projects that are supposed to come out of a class or just expectations of what grades and PTs are supposed to be.

Q: What makes you feel unsafe at d.tech?

Alberto Silva (Junior): There’s really nothing that makes me feel unsafe about d.tech.

Is there anything about the school itself or other students that might make you feel unsafe at all?

No, not really.

Q: What makes you feel unsafe about d.tech?

Ethan Yu (Senior):Not much.

Is there anything or anyone like certain teachers or…

I think all the teachers are pretty good here.

So it’s a pretty safe space here?

Yeah, unless you’re juuling. I don’t like the drugs here though, that’s the only issue I have.

Q: What makes you feel unsafe about d.tech?

Maeve Kelly (Junior): There were some students in my class that hated me and I don’t really know why.

What changed?

They left.

Q:  What makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe at d.tech?

Anonymous: I don’t really know. There’s not that much bullying here, and it’s not that I get bullied, but I do hear things from people, not directed towards me.

So gossip or…

Well, one time there were freshman boys sitting behind me in one class just saying rude things, not to me at all, but to each other. They were just being disrespectful and I was in shock, I don’t remember what they said exactly but it was just inappropriate and they shouldn’t even be saying that stuff.

Q: Are there any teachers that make you feel uncomfortable?

Well, I don’t like being yelled at by teachers, not gonna say who though.

Q: What makes you feel unsafe at d.tech?

Sasha Kuzmin (junior):I feel like I can’t always say what I believe in or make my voice be heard because of how many people have their mind set on certain things and that they’ll judge me on if they think my opinion is right or wrong, so I feel like I can’t say what I believe in.

Q: What makes you feel unsafe at d.tech?

Zach Nemirovsky (sophomore): Last year during intersession, there was this one kid, after the first intersession, we had like an ice cream party thing, this one kid went outside and picked up a metal shovel and just started walking around with it and that made me feel unsafe. There are some kids here who have questionable motives.
